Self Control: It's Already in You



As our pandemic day-to-day life doesn't seem like it's stopping any day now it definitely feels like many things are out of our control- with lockdowns and limits put on our normal day-to-day life it’s easy to feel like life is spiraling out of control.


But I wanted to let you know that despite all the lack of control we feel, we can still find our peace and stability in our own self-control.


I’ve been taking time over the last few days going through some of my old blog posts- reading through them partly for inspiration but also because I find encouragement in things I’ve written in the past.


One post in particular really stood out for me and encouraged me in today’s uncertainty. It was a post from a series I did on the Fruit of the Spirit. For those unfamiliar with the Fruit of the Spirit, it comes from the Bible- it is found in the New Testament in the book of Galatians, chapter 5, verses 22-23. The Fruit of the Spirit are personality traits that stem out of living a life centered on God. These are healthy and helpful traits that help us live our best lives.


Self-control is one of these fruits of the spirit.


I know that for many it may feel like self-control isn’t attainable- especially when life feels so out of control- and especially right now during this pandemic life.


We have thoughts of- I’d love to eat healthier but I have no control. I’d love to exercise but I have no control over my motivation. I’d love to stop excessive shopping but I have no control- somebody take my credit card and cut it up!


But the truth is we do have self-control. It’s in us- we just need to learn to grow and nurture it. The thing is we use self-control on a daily basis, in all matters of our life.


I can use self-control:

- To go to bed at a reasonable hour so I can get up to exercise early or even just to get a good night's sleep;

- To choose healthy foods that fuel and nourish my body;

- To control the words I use so that I encourage and build up the people in my life;

- When watching TV so that I’m careful to keep my mind on positive things that will encourage myself and build me up, and so on.


Self-control is the will power to make right choices in my life as it gets us to where we want to be and can also helps us reach our goals. When we don’t use self-control in our day-to-day life we can be easily tempted, discouraged, broken down and taken over. Self-control builds us up to be strong in the moments we need it most.


Self control gets stronger with time. We just have to utilize it; it’s like a muscle, it’s small and weak at first but the more you use it the stronger it gets and the more effortless it seems.


The first time you use it may seem hard and very uncomfortable but as you continue to use your self-control you’ll be encouraged to see the positive results in your life, especially in a time of such uncertainty.


So I challenge you today to think about the choices and decisions you are making with the assistance (or lack of) self control.

Is it life giving or life robbing? Will it add to your life or take away?

You can make choices using your self-control to make a healthier you and make the things around you feel a little more stable in a time of uncertainty.


You can do it, one step at a time, one day at a time, and one choice at a time.
